Upgrade VV2220v2 modem router

I have upgraded my A1 internet bandwidth 3 times, but I still have the original A1 VV2220v2 modem that was provided a few years ago.  I have never been happy with its WiFi performance or routing capabilities.  A1 helpline says they will charge around €100 to upgrade the modem, but they could not tell me exactly which one I would receive.

What is the best option to upgrade?  My main requirements are:

  1. Gigabit LAN
  2. Dual-band Wi-FI
  3. Strong WiFi performance
  4. VPN (OpenVPN or Wireguard)

Are there any A1 modems that best fit my needs?  Or would it be better to use that money to buy my own router and try to connect it to the VV2220v2?

Get a used AVM FRITZ!Box 7530 and that will solve your problems.

Would the intention be to replace the VV2220v2 or connect to it?  Since the A1 hotline indicated I would not able to use a privately bought modem as it would not have the username and password to connect to the WLAN.

Yes, just replace it. You get them used for less than 50€.

After factory reset it will get settings automatically from DSL.
But take care to take an AT/CH (international) version, not the one for Germany, which are not supported for auto-config (they differ in Manufacturer ID you need 20002845 not 20002839).
Otherwise user/pw needed (you get them from A1) and manually settings for internet only (VoIP and TV wont work).

Hi again, I have been offered a 7530 with Manufacturer ID 2000 2879 (Edition Magenta).  Will that work just as good as 2845?  Thank you.

If you dont use VoIP or TV it should be possible to configure it manually for internet only.
Better get an Austrian or international one. I never heard about 20002879 Magenta to make any advices. If you get it running you can stay with it.

Techcally it is possible with the Magenta Edition to remove the Magenta Flag.

If I recall correctly, that is not even needed.  They allow the change of the provider over the UI. The Magenta Edition is very likely based on the internation edition.

I have 2 Magenta Editions FRITZ!Box 7530 in use, but only as repeater and rebranded to intl.

Thanks very much.   I think I will go ahead and buy the Magenta Edition 2879 and report back to the forum.
